03 THE STORY

About this print

The Kiama Cove Boutique Motel sits on a street in Kiama on the NSW South Coast, the building two-storey brick with the room doors opening onto continuous balcony walkways at each floor. The brick is pale, the trim a coastal teal along the eaves and the balustrade. A pole sign at the kerb carries the property name in a 1990s-era boutique-styled face on a backlit panel, the lettering picked out in white against a teal ground. The carpark is empty in the small hours. A row of decorative palms in planters at the office end carries the standard postwar tropical landscaping. The Kiama foreshore is a short walk from the property.

The Kiama Cove Boutique Motel was photographed at 01:55 on 7 April 2018, on the South Coast run of Hotel Motel 101. The project covered 101 traditional Australian motor inns across three sweeps out of Sydney in late March and early April 2018: south on the Hume and Princes Highway corridor down to the start of the South Coast, north on the Pacific, west on the Great Western. Drive-thru reception, parking in front of the rooms, low rise. The "Boutique" rebrand was a 1990s-onward upgrade common to coastal Australian motor inns repositioning for the upper end of the holiday trade.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

A steel staircase cuts diagonally across the frame, rising from wet asphalt to a first-floor walkway. Metal balustrades line the upper corridor. A single bulb burns under the corrugated awning, throwing cold blue-white light across closed doors and dark windows. The ground level sits in pale yellow. Security mesh covers the upper windows. No cars. No people. Just geometry and fluorescent spill against the night.

Hotel Motel 101

2015–2020 · 103 photographs

Hotel Motel 101 is a series of one hundred and one motels photographed in 2018 across three runs out of Sydney. North to the Central Coast, west through the Blue Mountains to the central western tablelands, south down the NSW South Coast. The count crept up from a planned seventy toward the round number, plus one for safety.
