03 THE STORY

About this print

Maclin Lodge sits behind a wide front carpark, the brick building running along the rear of the lot with the room doors facing forward. The brick is dark, the trim a contrasting cream along the fascia and the doorframes. A pole-mounted sign at the kerb carries the name in white letters on a backlit blue panel. The carpark is empty in the small hours. A row of metal-framed chairs sits along the walkway outside the rooms. The front lawn is dry. The road beyond the property is dark, with the next streetlight some distance off.

Maclin Lodge was photographed at 23:34 on 2 April 2018, on the southern run of Hotel Motel 101. The project covered 101 traditional Australian motor inns across three sweeps out of Sydney in late March and early April 2018: south down the Hume Highway from Ashfield through Casula and into the Southern Highlands, north up the Pacific to the Central Coast, west through the Blue Mountains. Drive-thru reception, parking in front of the rooms, low rise.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

Two storeys of brown and tan brick face the empty car park. Dark timber balustrades line the upper walkway. Each room door is the same dark wood, evenly spaced, flanked by wall-mounted lights that flare hard against the brickwork. A window-unit air conditioner sits between two ground-floor rooms. Yellow parking lines mark the asphalt. No cars. No people. Just concrete, brick, and light.

Hotel Motel 101 is a series of one hundred and one motels photographed in 2018 across three runs out of Sydney. North to the Central Coast, west through the Blue Mountains to the central western tablelands, south down the NSW South Coast. The count crept up from a planned seventy toward the round number, plus one for safety.
