03 THE STORY

About this print

The Mt Kuring-gai Motel sits on the Pacific Highway at Mt Kuring-gai north of Sydney, the building single-storey brick with the room doors facing the front carpark under a continuous awning. The brick is pale, the trim a cream along the fascia. The cactus-and-neon sign that the project documents separately under another frame sits at the kerb in the daytime view; in this photograph the sign is one of the lit elements of the property's frontage. The carpark is empty in the early evening. A row of mature gum trees between the carpark and the road carries the standard Pacific Highway corridor landscaping.

The Mt Kuring-gai Motel was photographed at 21:01 on 11 April 2018, on the second northern run of Hotel Motel 101. The project covered 101 traditional Australian motor inns across three sweeps out of Sydney in late March and early April 2018: south on the Hume, north on the Pacific to the Central Coast, west on the Great Western. Drive-thru reception, parking in front of the rooms, low rise. Mt Kuring-gai sits at the northern edge of Sydney's suburban spread on the Pacific Highway corridor, the older alignment that carried the Sydney-to-Newcastle through traffic before the freeway took most of it.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

Two brown doors flank a single security light. Brown brick, green concrete roof tiles, frosted louvre windows centred between the rooms. A clipped box hedge sits in a terracotta pot on each side, symmetrical. The carpark asphalt is cracked and faded. Above the roofline, eucalyptus canopy dissolves into deep blue. Everything is still.

Hotel Motel 101

2015–2020 · 103 photographs

Hotel Motel 101 is a series of one hundred and one motels photographed in 2018 across three runs out of Sydney. North to the Central Coast, west through the Blue Mountains to the central western tablelands, south down the NSW South Coast. The count crept up from a planned seventy toward the round number, plus one for safety.
