The Ocean Front Motel at Blue Bay stands weathered. Its coastal facade, aged by salt and sun, shows peeling paint and empty windows. This structure embodies a quiet history of forgotten seaside stays.

03 THE STORY

About this print

The Ocean Front Motel at Blue Bay sits on a beachside street on the Central Coast, the property carrying the rooms forward across a two-storey block facing the water. The building is brick, with the room doors opening onto a continuous balcony walkway at the upper floor and a ground-floor walkway below. A pole sign at the kerb carries the property name on a backlit panel. The brick is cream, the trim painted in a coastal blue along the eaves and the balustrade. The carpark is empty in the small hours. A row of small front gardens between the carpark and the road carries the standard beachside landscaping. The ocean across the road is dark and quiet.

The Ocean Front Motel at Blue Bay was photographed at 01:23 on 5 April 2018, on the north run of Hotel Motel 101. The project covered 101 traditional Australian motor inns across three sweeps out of Sydney in late March and early April 2018: south on the Hume, north on the Pacific to the Central Coast, west on the Great Western. Drive-thru reception, parking in front of the rooms, low rise. Blue Bay sits between The Entrance and Toukley on the Central Coast strip, the kind of beachside Australian town the postwar motor inn was built to serve.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

Two storeys of painted blockwork and blue steel doors. Rooms numbered six through eighteen line the open-air walkways, each with a small frosted window and wall-mounted air conditioning unit. Fluorescent tubes wash the white walls in flat, cold light. A pink bodyboard leans against the railing on the lower level. Potted palms sit between the doors. No one is around. The car park below is empty.

Hotel Motel 101

2015–2020 · 103 photographs

Hotel Motel 101 is a series of one hundred and one motels photographed in 2018 across three runs out of Sydney. North to the Central Coast, west through the Blue Mountains to the central western tablelands, south down the NSW South Coast. The count crept up from a planned seventy toward the round number, plus one for safety.
