The Pioneer Way Motel sign, faded and worn, stands before the derelict building. Peeling paint and cracked concrete show the slow decay of this once-busy roadside lodging, now silent and abandoned.

03 THE STORY

About this print

The Pioneer Way Motel sits behind a front carpark with the building running the length of the back of the lot, single-storey brick under a continuous awning. The brick is pale, painted cream along the eaves. The room doors face the carpark in a straight row, each one numbered in stencilled gold on a small enamel plaque. A pole sign at the kerb carries the property's name in a serif face picked out in white against a backlit panel. The carpark is empty. A small palm tree in a planter at the office end carries the postwar motor inn's standard tropical-aspirational landscaping. The road in front of the property is dark.

The Pioneer Way Motel was photographed at 23:46 on 3 April 2018, on the southern run of Hotel Motel 101. The project covered 101 traditional Australian motor inns across three sweeps out of Sydney in late March and early April 2018: south on the Hume Highway, north on the Pacific, west on the Great Western. Drive-thru reception, parking in front of the rooms, low rise. Pioneer-themed names were a standard Australian motor inn flourish, reaching back to the country's settler mythology to give the property a connection to the highway-and-roadhouse culture it served.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

Room four. Sandstone-coloured blockwork lit by a single overhead floodlight. A sliding glass door and a wide window sit side by side, both screened by sheer curtains with a faint wave pattern. Behind the glass, the dim outline of a lamp and furniture. A small metal ashtray holder leans against the wall between the openings. The bitumen car park is empty. A security camera watches nothing.

Hotel Motel 101

2015–2020 · 103 photographs

Hotel Motel 101 is a series of one hundred and one motels photographed in 2018 across three runs out of Sydney. North to the Central Coast, west through the Blue Mountains to the central western tablelands, south down the NSW South Coast. The count crept up from a planned seventy toward the round number, plus one for safety.
