03 THE STORY

About this print

The Poplars Inn carries its name on a pole sign at the kerb in a serif face picked out in white against a backlit cream panel. The building behind the sign is single-storey, brick, with the room doors facing the front carpark under a continuous awning. A row of mature poplar trees along the front of the property gives the motel its name; the trees are tall, evenly spaced, providing daytime shade across the carpark. The brick is dark, the trim a cream along the fascia. The carpark is empty in the early evening. A row of metal-framed chairs sits along the walkway.

The Poplars Inn was photographed at 21:59 on 7 April 2018, on the South Coast run of Hotel Motel 101. The project covered 101 traditional Australian motor inns across three sweeps out of Sydney in late March and early April 2018: south on the Hume and Princes Highway corridor, north on the Pacific, west on the Great Western. Drive-thru reception, parking in front of the rooms, low rise. Tree-themed motel names were a standard postwar Australian flourish, with the property's signature trees often the most identifiable landscaping at the kerb-side.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

Three rooms numbered in sequence. Brown brick and cream-rendered columns repeat along a single-storey block. A timber bench sits outside each door. Small potted plants at the base of the walls. No-smoking signs mounted at uniform intervals. A red fire extinguisher case hangs between rooms 3 and 4. Split-system air conditioners punctuate the roofline. Fluorescent light falls flat across the concrete verandah. Beyond the gravel carpark, eucalyptus canopy dissolves into black sky. Stars are faintly visible. No cars. No movement.

Hotel Motel 101

2015–2020 · 103 photographs

Hotel Motel 101 is a series of one hundred and one motels photographed in 2018 across three runs out of Sydney. North to the Central Coast, west through the Blue Mountains to the central western tablelands, south down the NSW South Coast. The count crept up from a planned seventy toward the round number, plus one for safety.
