03 THE STORY

About this print

The Quality Inn at this site carries its name on a pole sign at the kerb in the brand's standard block-letter face. The building behind the sign is single-storey, brick, with the room doors facing the front carpark under a continuous awning. The brick is dark, the trim a contrasting cream. Each door is set into the wall at the standard motor-inn spacing, with the numbers in stencilled gold on small enamel plaques. A single security light at one end of the building throws hard white light across the asphalt. The carpark is empty. The road in front of the property is wide and quiet at this hour.

The Quality Inn was photographed at 22:45 on 3 April 2018, on the southern run of Hotel Motel 101. The project covered 101 traditional Australian motor inns across three sweeps out of Sydney in late March and early April 2018: south on the Hume Highway, north on the Pacific, west on the Great Western. Drive-thru reception, parking in front of the rooms, low rise. Quality Inn is a franchise brand that has applied to many independently-owned Australian motor inns; the building itself sits inside the traditional typology that the project documents regardless of the brand sign at the kerb.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

Two timber doors sit side by side in a brown brick facade. Six-panel construction, stained honey. Small wall-mounted lights throw hard white cones across the brickwork. Frosted windows flank each door. Green concrete roof tiles run the length of the building. An analogue TV antenna stands above the roofline against heavy grey cloud. The car park is empty. Yellow line markings divide the asphalt into bays. No cars. No movement.

Hotel Motel 101 is a series of one hundred and one motels photographed in 2018 across three runs out of Sydney. North to the Central Coast, west through the Blue Mountains to the central western tablelands, south down the NSW South Coast. The count crept up from a planned seventy toward the round number, plus one for safety.
