03 THE STORY

About this print

The Shellharbour Resort sits on a street in Shellharbour on the Illawarra coast, the building two-storey brick with the room doors opening onto continuous balcony walkways at each floor. The brick is cream, the trim a coastal teal along the eaves and the balustrade. A pole sign at the kerb carries the property name in a serif face on a backlit panel, the lettering picked out in white against the teal ground. The carpark is empty in the small hours. A row of decorative palms in planters at the office end carries the standard postwar tropical landscaping. The Pacific is a short walk from the property.

The Shellharbour Resort was photographed at 01:03 on 7 April 2018, on the south Illawarra run of Hotel Motel 101. The project covered 101 traditional Australian motor inns across three sweeps out of Sydney in late March and early April 2018: south on the Hume and Princes Highway corridor to the start of the South Coast, north on the Pacific, west on the Great Western. Drive-thru reception, parking in front of the rooms, low rise. The "Resort" branding was a 1990s-onward rebrand common to Illawarra coastal motor inns, reaching for a more aspirational pitch than the older "motel" or "motor inn".

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

Two storeys of rendered concrete and cream-painted doors face an empty car park. Fluorescent wall lights cast a flat, yellowish wash across both levels. Curtains hang closed behind every window. A single plastic chair sits outside room 10. The teal-painted kerb runs the length of the ground floor. Black steel balustrade lines the upper walkway. No cars. No people. Just bitumen and silence.

Hotel Motel 101 is a series of one hundred and one motels photographed in 2018 across three runs out of Sydney. North to the Central Coast, west through the Blue Mountains to the central western tablelands, south down the NSW South Coast. The count crept up from a planned seventy toward the round number, plus one for safety.
