The Shellharbour Village Motel sign stands faded, its letters chipped and worn. Empty rooms stare from dark windows. Paint peels from the exterior, revealing the strata of colours from past decades.

03 THE STORY

About this print

The Shellharbour Village Motel sits on a Shellharbour street within the older village area of the town, the building single-storey brick with the room doors facing the front carpark under a continuous awning. The brick is pale, the trim a cream along the fascia. A pole sign at the kerb carries the property name in a 1970s sans-serif on a backlit panel. The carpark is empty in the small hours. A row of metal-framed chairs sits along the walkway. The Shellharbour foreshore is a short walk from the property; the village's older streetscape, mostly intact, sits between the motel and the beach.

The Shellharbour Village Motel was photographed at 01:10 on 7 April 2018, on the south Illawarra run of Hotel Motel 101. The project covered 101 traditional Australian motor inns across three sweeps out of Sydney in late March and early April 2018: south on the Hume and Princes Highway corridor, north on the Pacific, west on the Great Western. Drive-thru reception, parking in front of the rooms, low rise. Village-branded motels at smaller Australian coastal towns commonly pitched themselves on the proximity to the historic centre rather than the open highway, with the trade aimed at the slower-paced holiday market.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

Two storeys of rendered concrete and steel balustrade. Upstairs, rooms 12 and 13 sit behind bright blue doors, a single wall-mounted light throwing hard white glare across the landing. Downstairs, room 3 has a dark panelled door and a warm amber bulb. Net curtains hang flat behind every window. A small blue "Reception" sign with an arrow points right. No Smoking. No cars in the carpark. No people.

Hotel Motel 101

2015–2020 · 103 photographs

Hotel Motel 101 is a series of one hundred and one motels photographed in 2018 across three runs out of Sydney. North to the Central Coast, west through the Blue Mountains to the central western tablelands, south down the NSW South Coast. The count crept up from a planned seventy toward the round number, plus one for safety.
