The Sky Rider Motor Inn sign stands weathered. Its paint peels, revealing layers of past colours. Rust marks the metal frame. This former roadside stop now offers a silent welcome.

03 THE STORY

About this print

The Sky Rider Motor Inn carries its name on a tall pole sign at the kerb in a cursive script with a small jet-aircraft silhouette beside the lettering. The sign is backlit and still glowing in the late hours. The building behind the sign is single-storey, brick, with the room doors facing the front carpark under a continuous awning. The brick is dark, the trim a cream along the fascia. The carpark is empty. A row of metal-framed chairs sits along the walkway. The Blue Mountains air is cool. The road in front of the property is wide and dark.

The Sky Rider Motor Inn was photographed at 01:16 on 4 April 2018, on the western run of Hotel Motel 101. The project covered 101 traditional Australian motor inns across three sweeps out of Sydney in late March and early April 2018: south on the Hume Highway, north on the Pacific, west on the Great Western Highway through the Blue Mountains. Drive-thru reception, parking in front of the rooms, low rise. The Sky Rider's aircraft motif at the sign reaches for the postwar jet-age glamour that Australian motor inns commonly invoked, even at properties hundreds of kilometres from any commercial airport.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

Three rooms face the car park. Numbers 27, 28, 29. Painted cinder block walls, pale grey. Corrugated iron roofline runs the full length. Evaporative coolers sit bolted beneath each window. Timber benches flank the doors, red-brown against the grey. Small garden beds hold clipped shrubs and a lattice trellis with pink flowers. The bitumen is cracked and scattered with gum leaves. Fluorescent light spills flat across every surface. No cars. No movement. The sky above is a dull amber haze.

2015–2020 · 103 photographs

Hotel Motel 101 is a series of one hundred and one motels photographed in 2018 across three runs out of Sydney. North to the Central Coast, west through the Blue Mountains to the central western tablelands, south down the NSW South Coast. The count crept up from a planned seventy toward the round number, plus one for safety.
