03 THE STORY

About this print

Sleep Express occupies a small lot off the highway, the building a single-storey brick strip with the room doors facing forward into a narrow carpark. The pole sign at the kerb carries the brand name in capital block letters on a backlit panel, the typeface a 1980s industrial sans-serif that puts the property at the budget end of the typology. The carpark is empty in the late evening. A security light at one end of the building throws hard light onto the asphalt. The room walls are unadorned, the awning supported by slim steel columns spaced evenly along the walkway.

Sleep Express was photographed at 22:01 on 2 April 2018, on the southern run of Hotel Motel 101. The project covered 101 traditional Australian motor inns across three sweeps out of Sydney in late March and early April 2018: south on the Hume Highway, north on the Pacific, west on the Great Western. Drive-thru reception, parking in front of the rooms, low rise. Names like Sleep Express sit at the no-frills end of the Australian motor inn trade, with the brand framing what the property offered before the customer even pulled in.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

Two storeys of blonde brick face an empty car park. Eight windows sit in rigid symmetry, each fitted with a metal awning that throws a hard diagonal shadow across the brickwork. Red-brown trim lines the sills. A horizontal band of darker brick separates the floors. Three concrete planters hold geraniums and a small palm, the only colour against the flat facade. Yellow line markings divide the asphalt into bays. No cars. No people.

Hotel Motel 101

2015–2020 · 103 photographs

Hotel Motel 101 is a series of one hundred and one motels photographed in 2018 across three runs out of Sydney. North to the Central Coast, west through the Blue Mountains to the central western tablelands, south down the NSW South Coast. The count crept up from a planned seventy toward the round number, plus one for safety.
