03 THE STORY

About this print

The Sovereign Inn Wollongong Motel sits on a Wollongong street in a two-storey brick building, the room doors opening onto continuous balcony walkways at each floor. The brick is dark, the trim a cream along the fascia and the balustrade. A pole sign at the kerb carries the property name in a serif face on a backlit panel, with a small crown graphic beside the lettering carrying the sovereign-themed flourish into the kerb-side branding. The carpark is empty in the small hours. A row of small front gardens between the carpark and the road has been left to dry. A single security light at the office end throws hard cones across the asphalt.

The Sovereign Inn was photographed at 00:25 on 7 April 2018, on the south Illawarra run of Hotel Motel 101. The project covered 101 traditional Australian motor inns across three sweeps out of Sydney in late March and early April 2018: south on the Hume and Princes Highway corridor, north on the Pacific, west on the Great Western. Drive-thru reception, parking in front of the rooms, low rise. Sovereign and royal naming was standard postwar Australian motel branding, reaching for English country glamour at the highway-side regardless of the property's actual scale.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

Teal doors numbered 25, 26, 27. Cream brick and blonde sandstock columns divide each room into identical bays. Grey curtains hang flat behind plate glass. A wrought iron bench sits outside room 27, flanked by clipped box hedges in brick planters. The concrete carpark stretches wide and empty. Overhead, a corrugated steel awning runs the full length of the block. Deep blue dusk presses down behind a wall of mature trees.

The series

Hotel Motel 101

2015–2020 · 103 photographs

Hotel Motel 101 is a series of one hundred and one motels photographed in 2018 across three runs out of Sydney. North to the Central Coast, west through the Blue Mountains to the central western tablelands, south down the NSW South Coast. The count crept up from a planned seventy toward the round number, plus one for safety.
