03 THE STORY

About this print

The Tahmoor Inn occupies a wide corner block on the old Hume Highway south of Sydney, a low-slung motor inn behind a front carpark wide enough for trucks. The building is single-storey, brick, painted cream along the room walls and a darker tone on the framing. A long covered walkway runs the length of the front, with the room doors opening directly onto the bays. The office at the far end carries a small lit signboard. The carpark is empty. A row of metal-framed chairs sits outside one of the rooms, deliberately untidy. Beyond the carpark the road carries the highway's long sodium-lit shoulder out toward the next town.

The Tahmoor Inn was photographed at 00:52 on 3 April 2018, on the southern run of Hotel Motel 101. The project covered 101 traditional Australian motor inns across three sweeps out of Sydney in late March and early April 2018: south on the Hume, north on the Pacific, west on the Great Western. Drive-thru reception, parking in front of the rooms, low rise. The Tahmoor's roadhouse-scale forecourt marks it as a Hume Highway property from the era when the highway carried every heavy vehicle between Sydney and Melbourne.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

Cream brick facade under a dark tiled roof. Diamond-mesh security screens hang open on every door and window. A single wall-mounted light throws sharp shadows across the brickwork. One lone shrub grows close to the wall, its leaves pressing against the mortar. The ground out front is bare compacted dirt and gravel. No cars. No signage. Deep blue dusk sky sits above a line of eucalypts.

Hotel Motel 101

2015–2020 · 103 photographs

Hotel Motel 101 is a series of one hundred and one motels photographed in 2018 across three runs out of Sydney. North to the Central Coast, west through the Blue Mountains to the central western tablelands, south down the NSW South Coast. The count crept up from a planned seventy toward the round number, plus one for safety.
