03 THE STORY

About this print

The Beachcomber Motel sits on a Central Coast beachside street, the property name reaching for the postwar coastal-holiday glamour that the Central Coast traded on through its mid-twentieth-century peak. The building is single-storey, brick, with the room doors facing the front carpark under a continuous awning. The brick is cream, painted with a teal trim along the fascia and the doorframes. A pole sign at the kerb carries the property name in a 1960s nautical script. A row of decorative palms in planters at the office end carries the standard postwar tropical landscaping. The carpark is empty in the small hours. A single security light throws hard cones across the asphalt.

The Beachcomber Motel was photographed at 00:44 on 5 April 2018, on the north run of Hotel Motel 101. The project covered 101 traditional Australian motor inns across three sweeps out of Sydney in late March and early April 2018: south on the Hume, north on the Pacific to the Central Coast, west on the Great Western. Drive-thru reception, parking in front of the rooms, low rise. Beachcomber-themed naming was standard along the Central Coast's beachside motel strip, with the brand signalling a coastal-holiday pitch regardless of whether the rooms actually faced the water.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

Two storeys of brown brick and concrete planter boxes face the carpark. Curtains are drawn across every sliding glass door. A security light throws a hard white circle onto wet asphalt below. Green plastic chairs sit on the upper balcony beside a steel railing. The lower rooms open directly onto tile and bitumen. Shrubs spill from rendered planters, trimmed but overgrown at the edges.

Hotel Motel 101 is a series of one hundred and one motels photographed in 2018 across three runs out of Sydney. North to the Central Coast, west through the Blue Mountains to the central western tablelands, south down the NSW South Coast. The count crept up from a planned seventy toward the round number, plus one for safety.
