03 THE STORY

About this print

The Waterview Gosford Motor Inn sits on a corner block in Gosford, the building two-storey with the room doors opening onto a continuous balcony walkway at the upper floor and a ground-floor walkway below. The brick is dark, the trim a cream along the fascia. A pole sign at the kerb carries the name in white on a backlit blue panel, with a small wave graphic beside the lettering. The carpark is empty at this hour. A single security light at the office end throws hard light across the asphalt. The view that the property name promises, of the Brisbane Water across the road, is dark at this hour but the property is sited to deliver it during daylight.

The Waterview Gosford Motor Inn was photographed at 23:28 on 4 April 2018, on the north run of Hotel Motel 101. The project covered 101 traditional Australian motor inns across three sweeps out of Sydney in late March and early April 2018: south on the Hume, north on the Pacific to the Central Coast, west on the Great Western. Drive-thru reception, parking in front of the rooms, low rise. The Central Coast's waterfront motor inns commonly built their pitch on the proximity to Brisbane Water and the Hawkesbury, with the rooms positioned to give an upper-floor view where the lot allowed.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

Two storeys of cream brick face an empty car park. Rooms 12 through 19, numbered in sequence, each behind identical timber-veneer doors. Black iron balustrades line the upper walkway. Fluorescent wall sconces throw hard white light across the facade. Behind one window, a television glows blue through thin curtains. Tar-sealed cracks vein the asphalt. A single fire extinguisher sits on the upper balcony. No cars. No people.

Hotel Motel 101

2015–2020 · 103 photographs

Hotel Motel 101 is a series of one hundred and one motels photographed in 2018 across three runs out of Sydney. North to the Central Coast, west through the Blue Mountains to the central western tablelands, south down the NSW South Coast. The count crept up from a planned seventy toward the round number, plus one for safety.
