03 THE STORY

About this print

The Windmill Motel carries its name on a pole sign at the kerb with a small windmill graphic beside the lettering. The sign is backlit and the lettering picked out in white against a cream panel. The building behind the sign is single-storey, brick, with the room doors facing the front carpark under a continuous awning. The brick is pale, painted with a brown trim. A small decorative windmill sits in a planter at the office end, a cast-metal or fibreglass piece carrying the property's branding into a physical garden ornament. The carpark is empty in the late evening. A single security light at the office end throws hard cones across the asphalt.

The Windmill Motel was photographed at 23:14 on 6 April 2018, on the south-Wollongong run of Hotel Motel 101. The project covered 101 traditional Australian motor inns across three sweeps out of Sydney in late March and early April 2018: south on the Hume and the Princes Highway corridor, north on the Pacific, west on the Great Western. Drive-thru reception, parking in front of the rooms, low rise. Decorative motel signs with garden-ornament motifs were a standard piece of the postwar Australian motel idiom, with the brand made physical in the forecourt as a road-trip landmark.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

Cream brick facade. Brown tile roof. Carved timber doors numbered 3, 4, 5, each set between curtained windows. Wall-mounted lights throw hard cones onto the brickwork. A terracotta pot holds a single trimmed shrub. Metal bistro chairs sit paired outside each room. The car park is empty. Yellow line markings on wet asphalt. The sky is black and close.

Hotel Motel 101 is a series of one hundred and one motels photographed in 2018 across three runs out of Sydney. North to the Central Coast, west through the Blue Mountains to the central western tablelands, south down the NSW South Coast. The count crept up from a planned seventy toward the round number, plus one for safety.
