03 THE STORY

About this print

The Windsor Motel sits in Windsor on the Hawkesbury River, the building single-storey brick with the room doors facing the front carpark under a continuous awning. The brick is pale, the trim a cream along the fascia and the doorframes. A pole sign at the kerb carries the property name in a serif face on a backlit cream panel; the typography references the English Windsor, by way of every Australian motel that wanted to claim a touch of royal-county aspiration. The carpark is empty in the early evening. A row of metal-framed chairs sits along the walkway.

The Windsor Motel was photographed at 21:55 on 9 April 2018, on the western Hawkesbury run of Hotel Motel 101. The project covered 101 traditional Australian motor inns across three sweeps out of Sydney in late March and early April 2018: south on the Hume, north on the Pacific, west on the Great Western. Drive-thru reception, parking in front of the rooms, low rise. Windsor is one of the oldest European-settled towns in Australia, established 1810 by Governor Macquarie as one of the Hawkesbury "Five Towns", and the local royal-naming carried directly into the motel's branding.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

Two rooms face the car park under a low corrugated steel awning. Blue doors, blue steel columns, yellow bollards. A single bulb between the rooms throws warm light across rendered walls and wet concrete. A white plastic chair sits outside one door. A dark chair outside the other. Doormats centred on each threshold. Conifers rise behind the roofline into a black sky. No cars. No guests.

Hotel Motel 101

2015–2020 · 103 photographs

Hotel Motel 101 is a series of one hundred and one motels photographed in 2018 across three runs out of Sydney. North to the Central Coast, west through the Blue Mountains to the central western tablelands, south down the NSW South Coast. The count crept up from a planned seventy toward the round number, plus one for safety.
