03 THE STORY

About this print

Cream doors numbered 44 through 47 line a single-storey brown brick building at the Zig Zag Motel in Lithgow. A security light between rooms 45 and 46 throws hard white glare across the concrete carpark. There are no cars in the bays. The parking lines on the slab have faded to grey. Small potted plants sit beside doorways. A eucalyptus rises above the tiled roof into a sky thick with stars and a faint green atmospheric haze. The motel takes its name from the Zig Zag Railway that descends the Blue Mountains escarpment a few kilometres west of the property.

The Zig Zag was on the western run of Hotel Motel 101, the Blue Mountains leg out toward the Central Western Tablelands. The series photographed 101 traditional Australian motor inns across three runs out of Sydney over 2018: north along the Central Coast, west through the Blue Mountains, south down the start of the South Coast. Drive-thru reception, parking in front of the rooms, low rise. Most of the photography happened on the second or third night of consecutive shoots, sometime between midnight and dawn, when the carpark of a motel like this one had emptied out completely.

Hotel Motel 101 is a series of one hundred and one motels photographed in 2018 across three runs out of Sydney. North to the Central Coast, west through the Blue Mountains to the central western tablelands, south down the NSW South Coast. The count crept up from a planned seventy toward the round number, plus one for safety.
