03 THE STORY

About this print

A doctor's office at Kuwashima Orthopaedic Clinic, Yubari. A desk sits along one wall, the working surface stained where files and equipment once stood. A chair is pulled up to the desk. Medical files and forgotten equipment lie across the floor, the papers yellowed and the equipment covered in dust. Light enters through a grimy window on the outer wall and falls across the desk surface.

Kuwashima was a regional medical facility in Yubari, southern Hokkaido, with orthopaedic and post-surgical rehabilitation among its services. The city's population fell from over 100,000 at the 1960s coal-boom peak to below 10,000 in the decades since the mines closed. The hospital was closed at some point in that contraction. The interior has stood largely undisturbed in the years since.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

A dark blue vinyl couch sits against the far wall, its surface covered in a fine grey dust. A coffee table holds a glass ashtray, documents, and a lace doily gone stiff with grime. Behind it, a desk chair carries a visible paw print pressed into the fabric. Filing trays, binders, and plastic drawer units crowd the desk. Curtains sag from their rails, stained with mould. Pale light filters through bent venetian blinds. A Persian rug on the floor has begun to rot at the edges.
