03 THE STORY

About this print

A karaoke setup sits inside Kuwashima Orthopaedic Clinic. A microphone on a stand and a screen on a wheeled trolley are arranged in one of the rooms; the cables run loose to a small amplifier on the floor. Dust covers the equipment. The setup is more recent than the abandonment of the building; karaoke nights run in disused medical buildings are part of the haikyo culture that grew in Japan after the working buildings emptied.

Kuwashima Orthopaedic Clinic is in Yubari, southern Hokkaido, a city that contracted from over 100,000 residents in the 1960s to below 10,000 today following the closure of the coal mines. The clinic was abandoned at some point in that contraction. The interior has accumulated traces of post-closure visits across the years, from staged arrangements to ephemeral installations like the karaoke setup.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

A colour photograph lies face-up on a floor of shattered tiles. Three men in dark suits stand before microphones, one holding a sheet of paper mid-song. The print is creased and speckled with grit. Beneath it, pale blue tiles have cracked into dozens of jagged pieces. A second sheet of blank paper sits half-buried underneath.

Kuwashima Hospital sits in Yubari, on the island of Hokkaido in northern Japan. The town's population peaked above one hundred thousand in the 1960s and has since fallen below seven thousand. The hospital is abandoned.
