03 THE STORY

About this print

Worn chairs sit in a waiting room at Kuwashima Orthopaedic Clinic. The chairs are upholstered, the fabric stained and split, the frames painted in the institutional palette of the clinic's working years. Dust covers every surface. Light enters through grimy windows along the outer wall and falls across the chairs and the floor between them. The walls are painted plaster, the paint peeling in patches.

Kuwashima Orthopaedic Clinic was a private specialist orthopaedic clinic in Yubari, southern Hokkaido. Patients waited for appointments in rooms like this one across the working life of the building. Yubari's population peaked at over 100,000 in the 1960s during the coal mining boom and fell below 10,000 after the mines closed. The clinic was abandoned at some point in that contraction.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

A vinyl bench sits in the centre of the ground-floor lobby, its chrome legs corroded brown. Ceiling panels hang at angles. Plaster has separated from the walls in broad sheets, exposing damp concrete beneath. A small "W.C." sign marks a doorway to the left. Behind the bench, a red Coca-Cola vending machine stands upright against the far wall, its branding still legible. Debris covers the floor. Light enters from a single window, flat and grey.
