Aoiike sits near Shirogane Onsen in Biei, Hokkaido. The pond formed by accident, an outcome of erosion-control works built after Mount Tokachi erupted in 1988. Dead larch trunks still stand where the trees were caught when the water came in. The turquoise reads almost artificial against the pale cloud and muted brown forest behind.
