Aoiike sits near Shirogane Onsen, on the eastern edge of Biei in Hokkaido. The pond formed by accident, an outcome of erosion-control works built after Mount Tokachi erupted in 1988. The blue comes from aluminium minerals in the water reacting with sunlight. Dead larch and birch trunks still stand where the trees were caught when the water came in. The colour shifts through the year with light and season.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

Dead birch and larch stand upright in opaque turquoise water. Their bare trunks have bleached to pale grey, branches stripped back to thin fingers. The colour of the pond shifts between blue and green depending on depth. Reflections double every trunk, sharp and unbroken. The surface is perfectly still. Behind the drowned trees, a dense line of Japanese larch rises along the bank, brown and leafless in early spring.
