Yummy

Wet asphalt outside a white-painted brick building at Greenacre in south-west Sydney mirrors the red burn of a neon sign spelling Yummy, the reflection broken by streaks of cooler blue light from across the street. Rain has turned the car park into a second canvas, holding the glow long after the source has left the frame. One door stands open with a glimpse of the interior, two fluorescent street lamps sit either side, and a faint Open sign shows through the entrance.

Brett photographed this on the evening of 9 August 2022, on the Nikon D850, in a five-second exposure that lets the reflection pool and spread across the wet ground. The Landscapes collection covers his wider travel photography across Australia and Japan rather than the abandoned-places work the Lost Collective is built on, and there is nothing much to say about the building. The reflection is the picture. The sign is mostly read through its red smear on the asphalt rather than directly, and the whole colour argument is that warm red set against the cooler blue spill from across the road. A plain shopfront on a wet night, lifted entirely by the weather and the length of the exposure.
