04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

The Great Ocean Road winds through a cutting in the coastal rock face, the asphalt banking hard through an S-bend. Exposed sandstone and brown earth rise steeply on the right. Dense scrub and tea tree push against the metal guardrail on the left. Long-exposure light trails from headlights and tail lights streak amber and red through the curves, pooling where traffic slowed at the apex. Beyond the vegetation, the Southern Ocean sits low under a thick band of cloud.
