The imposing industrial steam engine, a relic of past industry, stands silent. Its intricate network of pipes and heavy gears bears the deep patina of rust and decades of disuse. Dust coats every surface.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

A portable steam engine sits in open pasture, its iron wheels sunk into thick green grass. The cylindrical boiler shows layers of flaking paint. Green, cream, red. The firebox is exposed, its tube plate pocked with circular openings. A large flywheel dominates the centre of the machine. The smokestack rises vertical against heavy cloud. Behind it, eucalypt-covered ranges run the length of the valley.
