Light filters into the downstairs hallway of the Terminus Hotel. Paint peels from the walls, revealing layers of past colours. This corridor stretches into shadow, a silent witness to years of abandonment and decay.

03 THE STORY

About this print

The downstairs hallway at the Terminus Hotel runs along the spine of the ground floor, connecting the bar at the John Street corner to the back-of-house service areas. The floor is timber, scuffed at the centre line where decades of foot traffic passed. Doors open along both sides: storerooms on one, the bar entrance on the other, the side-access door at the John Street end. The walls are plastered, painted in the institutional dark green of the pub's working areas, with the paint flaking near the skirting where damp has worked through. An arched doorway at the far end of the passage opens through to the back yard. The light reaches the hallway through the half-glazed door behind the camera and through the open doors along the sides.

This passage carried the foot traffic of the hotel through every shift of its working life. Glasses out to the wash, kegs in from the side access, deliveries from the John Street footpath, staff between the bar and the kitchen. The pub closed in 1983 and the doors along this corridor stopped being used. The corridor stayed in place across the 33 years of vacancy. The 2018 reopening kept the hallway essentially as it was, with the surface finishes redone for service.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

This hallway once connected the daily workings of the Terminus Hotel, stretching from the main bar past the dining room and barkeeper’s office, looping around the kitchen toward the beer garden beyond.

The corner of Harris and John Streets, Pyrmont, has held a licensed pub almost continuously since 1841, under four names. Sydney's Harris Street electric tram opened in 1898 and terminated at the front door. The owners added a two-storey wing and renamed the pub Terminus around 1900.
