Faded signage clings to a shopfront at number 167 Parramatta Road, photographed in 2016. Green lettering across the upper windows reads 'Specialising in preowned refrigeration, cooking and catering equipment', sun-bleached against white render. Peeling paint reveals layers of past colours. Dust settles on the grimy display window. A broken awning casts a deep shadow.

About this print
A two-storey commercial building sits hard against Parramatta Road. Green lettering across the upper fascia reads "Specialising in Pre-Owned Refrigeration Cooking & Catering Equipment." Several letters are missing. Late afternoon light turns the cream cladding warm gold. Glass shopfronts below sit empty and dark. Concrete forecourt, cracked at the edges. Power lines cut across a flat blue sky.

The series
Parramatta Road
Parramatta Road runs west from the edge of Sydney's city centre to Parramatta, on the line of the first overland route between Sydney Town and the settlement first named Rose Hill. Convict labour cut a three-metre-wide track through the bush between 1789 and 1791, and Governor Macquarie opened the road, widened and paved in stone, on 10 April 1811. The photographs, taken from 2016 to 2018, follow it from Auburn to Stanmore, past a used car dealer's building, a motel and a milk bar.
