03 THE STORY

About this print

187 is a two-storey commercial building sitting hard against the roadway on Parramatta Road, photographed in the late afternoon of 4 September 2016. There is no setback and no forecourt. The upper storey carries the older architecture and the ground floor carries whatever the current trade requires, which is the arrangement most of the corridor eventually settled into.

The lack of space in front of the building is not an accident of the original subdivision. Parramatta Road was widened through the 1920s and 1930s, sealed, and stripped of its tramlines, with a further widening at Ashfield in 1936. The Main Roads Act passed the NSW Parliament on 10 November 1924 and the Main Roads Board began operating the following year, which put the whole corridor under a single state authority for the first time. The road took the width it needed out of the frontages on either side, and what was left was a traffic-scaled street where the buildings stand at the kerb and the footpath is narrow enough to be hostile. By 1981 it was carrying 55,000 vehicles a day, and 70,000 by 1985. The M4 took a share of that away when it opened in 1986, and the M4 East tunnels took more when they opened in July 2019. The buildings stayed where the widening left them.

A two-storey commercial building sits hard against Parramatta Road. Corrugated metal cladding wraps the upper fascia. Below it, a long band of windows stretches across the frontage, most boarded with plywood sheeting. Graffiti covers the panels and glass in greens, reds, whites. Shrubs push through cracks in the concrete forecourt. The number 187 is fixed to a brown brick pier at the right. A roller door opens into darkness beside it. Morning light falls flat across the facade. The road is empty.

Parramatta Road follows a much older route, used for thousands of years by the Wangal, Wallumedegal, Burramattagal, and Cadigal peoples before colonial adoption around 1789 to 1791. Today it is one of Sydney's main thoroughfares: 23 km of heavy traffic, with used car dealers at the Parramatta end ("Auto Alley") and a mix of historic shopfronts, new apartment blocks, and WestConnex demolition at the eastern end. The series moves between streetscape and individual buildings - 107 Parramatta Road in Annandale (an 1890s Victorian Filigree shopfront with original living quarters above accessible only by ladder), the Marco Polo Motel at Summer Hill, the Olympia Milk Bar in Stanmore, Mario's Meat Market, and shopfronts whose ground floors have been busy for a century while the rooms above have been empty for fifty years.
