White ceramic tiles line the walls of the kitchen corridor, their grout darkened with grime and mould. The floor is tiled too, slick with moisture, reflecting a shaft of light from an unseen window. Ceiling fans hang motionless overhead. Doors stand open along the passage, each framing another doorway beyond. A bent metal strip lies discarded on the floor. Graffiti marks the far wall in thick black paint. The Queen Victoria Sanatorium opened in 1904 on the ridge above Mount Victoria in the Blue Mountains. It treated women and children suffering from tuberculosis. The complex operated as a hospital until the 1990s and has sat derelict since. The NSW government transferred the site to Blue Mountains City Council in 2014.
