From the field notes
Butterbur shoots push through bare soil at ground level. Pale green leaves fan outward, thick and waxy, cupping clusters of tight buds not yet open. A second plant stands behind, softer in the blur. Dry grass and fallen twigs line the dirt. Warm light catches the leaf edges.
