Shikanotani Station

Yubari, Hokkaido, Japan · Photographed in Yubari, 2018

Shikanotani Station in Yubari stands derelict. Overgrown tracks lead to a crumbling platform. The small building appears forgotten, its windows dark and empty. Rust colours the metal, marking time's passage.

From the field notes

A single-storey JR station building sits square to the empty forecourt. Pale cream cladding, a teal metal roof, a small gabled portico above the entrance. Louvred vents flank the front door. Green pipe railings line one side. The asphalt is cracked and bare. Power lines cross an overcast sky. Behind the roofline, leafless birch and larch climb the hillside. No cars. No passengers. Cold, still air.
