From the field notes
A narrow concrete lane curves between buildings clad in dark timber and corrugated iron. To the right, a two-storey house sits close to the road. Teal metal awning over the entrance. Plaster cracking at the corners. A gas metre bolted to the white lower wall. Power lines cross overhead, strung between leaning poles. Behind, the hillside rises steeply, terraced with retaining walls and brown winter grass. No people. No cars. Green moss creeps along the gutters.
