Store Roof

Red graffiti marks the low concrete parapet in the foreground of a flat roof at Wangi Power Station, debris and exposed pipework scattered across the surface below. Behind it the triple-brick walls rise through multiple storeys of broken multi-paned windows, and one of the station's three reinforced-concrete chimneys, each 76 metres tall, cuts into an overcast sky. The main building stretches 228 metres along the shore of Lake Macquarie.

Maintenance on stores buildings at a working power station is a low-priority job that gets done only as the operating plant allows. After Wangi closed at the end of 1986, no maintenance was carried out on any of the ancillary buildings. The roofs across the complex have been deteriorating slowly across the years since. The 2017 site fire damaged parts of the complex, separate from that ordinary weather damage on a lake-shore site.
