About this print

The coal bunkers at West Ryde Pumping Station occupy the upper reaches of the boiler house complex, positioned at roof level so that coal wagons could roll in from the reinforced concrete coal staith alongside and discharge their loads directly into the bunker structure below. From there, coal dropped by gravity to the boilers. The system was practical and deliberate: eliminate manual handling, keep the fuel moving, keep the fires burning. Photographed in 2015, the structure reads as a record of that logic. Riveted steel beams span the frame from below. Bolted plate connections, thick with rust, hold the assembly together. A green-painted gantry staircase runs along the left side, its treads and handrail still in place. Chains hang from overhead machinery. Paint has lifted and peeled from most surfaces. The hardware is intact; what it once served is not. Station No. 2 at Ryde Pumping Station was commissioned on 15 September 1921 as the largest steam-powered water pumping station in Australia. It was built to replace the capacity of the original 1891 station, which had been exhausted by the growth of Sydney's northern suburbs. Coal was the fuel that made it run, and between 1922 and 1927 the station adopted pulverised coal for its boilers, an innovative approach for an Australian water utility of that era. The coal staith alongside the boiler house was built from reinforced concrete, itself a relatively early industrial application at the time of the station's construction. The broader station complex is listed on the NSW State Heritage Register (Item #01634, gazetted 15 November 2002) and received an Engineering Heritage National Marker in October 2017. The station continues to pump water to Sydney's northern suburbs. These bunkers, in 2015, stood as the physical remains of the fuel system that ran for roughly six decades before electrification was completed in 1982.

The coal bunkers inside West Ryde Pumping Station sit at roof level, positioned so that coal wagons could deliver fuel directly from the reinforced concrete coal staith by rail. From there, coal dropped by gravity into the boilers below. Between 1922 and 1927, the station converted to pulverised coal for its boilers, an innovative approach for the period. By 2015, the riveted steel structure and gantry staircase remained in place, paint peeling and rust spreading across the bolted connections, the delivery system long stilled but the hardware intact.

Ryde Pumping Station, on the corner of Victoria Road and Hermitage Road in West Ryde, was the largest pumping station in Australia when its 1921 building was completed. The first station on the site went up in 1891, taking water from Potts Hill Reservoir and lifting it to Ryde tank and Chatswood through a pair of 146-horsepower vertical compound pumping engines moving 3,400 gallons a minute. The second and larger station was commissioned on 15 September 1921 and absorbed the work; the original station ceased pumping in November 1930 and was demolished in 1961. The 1921 station continues to operate as a working water utility, and was added to the NSW State Heritage Register on 15 November 2002. Engineering Heritage Australia recognised the place in 2017.
