03 THE STORY

About this print

The Slab Caster Plant at Port Kembla Steelworks is a large-volume industrial space defined by structural steel framing at a scale calibrated for continuous, high-temperature production. In this 2016 photograph, the plant floor is occupied by colossal machinery, its beams carrying heavy surface rust, the control panels that once governed the casting process abandoned in place. Light enters from above, throwing the scale of the space into relief and picking out the texture of decades of heat, steam, and industrial atmosphere settled into every surface. Port Kembla Steelworks has operated continuously since No. 1 blast furnace was blown in on 29 August 1928. The site began as the works of Australian Iron and Steel Ltd, passed to BHP as a subsidiary in 1935, and has operated under BlueScope Steel since 2002. Over nearly a century, successive construction phases transformed what began as a single 800-tonne-per-day blast furnace and open hearth shop into Australia's largest crude steel production plant, covering 760 hectares on the coastal plain south of Wollongong. Continuous slab casting was first commissioned at Port Kembla in 1978, part of a broader shift away from ingot casting that coincided with the introduction of basic oxygen steelmaking from 1972. By 1982, the last open hearth furnaces had closed after the third basic oxygen vessel came online. The transition was not only technological; between 1982 and 1989, the workforce fell from approximately 20,400 to around 12,000 employees, even as production levels held. The control panels visible in the frame represent the instrumentation layer of that era: analogue systems designed to govern a process running around the clock, feeding molten steel into continuous casting lines that would produce the slab stock for Port Kembla's rolling mills. The machinery has not been removed. It remains where it last operated, the plant now recording what that period of steelmaking looked like in physical form.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

Inside the Slab Caster Plant at Port Kembla Steelworks, rusting beams and silent control panels mark where continuous casting first came to Port Kembla in 1978, replacing the ingot casting process that had defined steelmaking on the site for decades. The plant was part of a broader modernisation that saw basic oxygen steelmaking introduced from 1972 and open hearth furnaces closed entirely by 1982. What remains is the physical record of that transition: machinery built to run continuously, now standing in a space that once fed Australia's largest crude steel production plant.

The BlueScope Port Kembla steelworks is the largest crude-steel production plant in Australia and the largest single industrial operation in the Illawarra. The site began in 1928 as Australian Iron & Steel, taking over Charles Hoskins's iron operation from Lithgow. First steel was made in 1931. BHP merged with AIS in 1935 and the works ran as BHP Steel until 2002, when BlueScope was demerged from BHP. The No.6 Blast Furnace was decommissioned in 2011 when BlueScope withdrew from the export market and stood dormant for over a decade before reline work was approved in 2021 at an estimated $1.15 billion. The No.5 Blast Furnace is approaching end of life. The Lost Collective photographs document the dormant sections of the works during the period after the 2011 shutdown.
