About this print

Dust-heavy curtains hang across the exit doors of a function room at Callan Park, Rozelle. The parquet floor inside the room is buckled and stained from years of water damage. Light bleeds through the fabric of the curtains from the doors behind them. The walls of the function room are plastered and painted, the surfaces holding the marks of layered paint from successive decades of use.

The Callan Park site merged with Broughton Hall in 1976 to form Rozelle Hospital. Full hospital closure followed on 30 April 2008, when remaining patients were transferred to Concord Hospital. The site, on the Iron Cove foreshore at Lilyfield, is now public parkland managed by Greater Sydney Parklands and is protected from subdivision by the Callan Park (Special Provisions) Act 2002.

From the field notes

Heavy curtains hang across double doors and flanking windows, blocking most of the daylight. What gets through catches the worn parquet floor, slick with moisture and grime. An exit sign glows green above the centre doors. The room is bare. No furniture. No fittings. Just curtain fabric gone dusty pink with age, and plaster walls stained a deep tobacco grey.

Callan Park

Callan Park opened in 1885 as the Callan Park Hospital for the Insane, on land at Rozelle in Sydney's Inner West. The Kirkbride Complex was designed by colonial architect James Barnet and superintendent Frederick Norton Manning, intended as a working example of the more progressive psychiatric care principles of the period. The hospital was reorganised through the twentieth century and many of the wards remain. Brett photographed across multiple visits between 2016 and 2018.
