Tiled walls of a colliery washhouse changeroom. Surface finish aged and marked, grout lines visible between tiles. Fittings remain in place. Natural light falls across the wall from an unseen opening. The room reads as a functional washing facility stripped back to its structure.

About this print
The washhouse at Elrington Colliery served the men coming off shift from 1,190 feet below ground. Purpose-built changing areas, handwash basins, and separate shower rooms made up the complex, a standard fixture of any operating colliery in the Hunter Valley coalfields. BHP Collieries closed Elrington in December 1962, citing persistent operating losses, with approximately 90 men affected. The washhouse stood long after the shaft collars were dismantled and the screens demolished, recording what remained of a mine that never reached its planned output of 3,000 tonnes a day.
