About this print
A mercury vapour lamp stands between the workshop building and the main engine house at Elrington Colliery, near Abernethy. It is the kind of fitting that would have burned through the night shifts, lighting the yard as workers crossed between the surface buildings. BHP ran the mine from 1930 until December 1962, extracting coal from the Main Greta Seam at 1,190 ft below surface. The colliery closed with large reserves still in the ground. This photograph was made in 2017.
