About this print
The lamp cabin racks at Elrington Colliery served a straightforward but critical function: numbered safety lamps were issued to miners at the start of each shift and returned on surfacing, giving surface staff a direct count of who remained underground at any given time. Elrington Colliery operated from 1930 until December 1962, supplying coal from the Main Greta Seam, 1,190 feet below the surface, to BHP's Newcastle steelworks. The lamp cabin was among the last points of contact between a miner and the surface world before he descended.
