03 THE STORY

About this print

The end wall of the main engine house at Elrington Colliery stands at the eastern edge of the surface complex BHP Collieries built near Abernethy, in the Hunter Valley coalfields. The workshop building is visible in the background, separated by open ground. Together these two structures were the operational core of what BHP intended to be one of the most modern collieries in Australia. Shaft-sinking operations commenced in January 1925, with all machinery reported as installed by that date. The mine was formally established as Elrington Colliery in 1927, with the stated purpose of supplying coking coal to BHP's Newcastle steelworks. Surface infrastructure was largely complete by 1927. Coal production commenced in 1930 from two concrete-lined shafts, each 18 feet in diameter, sunk to the Main Greta Seam at 1,190 feet below the surface. BHP designed Elrington to produce 3,000 tonnes per day. Actual output during the 1950s ran at roughly 250,000 to 340,000 tonnes per year, consistently short of that target. The mine's failure to meet planned capacity became a documented case study in the limits of early mechanisation on the Hunter coalfields. In December 1962, BHP closed the colliery with large reserves of coal still in the ground, citing persistent operating losses. Approximately 90 men were affected. The workshops did not go idle. BHP opened an engineering business at the former colliery site on 17 June 1964, and the operation continued under private ownership into the following decades. This photograph, made in 2017, records the engine house end wall and workshops as they stood more than five decades after coal production ceased. The brick surfaces carry the weathering of that interval. The building line remains clear.

The mine never reached that figure. It ran from 1930 until December 1962, when BHP cited persistent operating losses and closed it with large coal reserves still in the ground.
