About this print
The stairs at Elrington Colliery's pay office connected the administrative level to the main yard below. After ascending from the Main Greta Seam, 363 metres underground, workers collected their wages at this level before heading out. BHP Collieries Proprietary Ltd ran the mine from 1930 until December 1962, when it closed with large reserves of coal still unworked in the seam. Approximately 90 men were affected by the closure.
