About this print
The pay and manager's office at Elrington Colliery, near Abernethy, was where the administrative side of the mine's operation ran alongside the physical one. Underground workers collected wages here after shifts in the Main Greta Seam, 1,190 ft below the surface. BHP Collieries Proprietary Limited operated the mine from 1930, supplying coal to its Newcastle steelworks, until December 1962 when the colliery closed with large reserves still in the ground.
