A small interior room, identified as the pay office. Venetian blinds hang broken across a window, slats bent and misaligned. Wall and ceiling surfaces are peeling, paint or lining material curling away in sections. Natural light enters through the damaged blinds, falling across the deteriorated surfaces. The room is empty.

About this print
The pay office at Elrington Colliery near Abernethy sits stripped and quiet, its venetian blinds bent out of shape, its surfaces peeling back from the walls. This is where underground workers came to collect their wages during the mine's 32 years of coal production. BHP Collieries Proprietary Ltd closed Elrington in December 1962, citing persistent operating losses. Approximately 90 men were affected. The seam was not worked out, large reserves remained underground when the gates shut.
