About this print
The pay office windows at Elrington Colliery face the main engine house across the surface complex, with the workshop and washhouse between them. BHP Collieries opened the mine in 1930 to supply coking coal to the Newcastle steelworks, sinking two concrete-lined shafts eighteen feet in diameter to the Main Greta Seam, 1,190 feet below the surface. The mine closed in December 1962 with large reserves still in the ground. About 90 men were affected by the closure.
