About this print
A rusted farm plough sits on open grazing land near the former Elrington Colliery site, outside Abernethy in the Hunter Valley. The colliery closed in December 1962 after BHP cited persistent operating losses, leaving large reserves of coal still in the ground. The surface around the mine has since returned to agriculture. The plough in the frame is a reminder of how completely the land reverted once the colliery was gone, shafts sealed, branch railway dismantled in 1963, and the ground given back to grass and livestock.
