About this print
The washhouse at Elrington Colliery, near Abernethy, was the last stop on every underground shift. Workers coming up from the Main Greta Seam had descended 363 metres to reach the coal face; they came back up carrying it on their skin. The showers here cleaned the crew before they went home. The mine worked the seam from 1930 until December 1962, when BHP closed it, citing persistent operating losses, with large reserves of coal still untouched underground.
