About this print
The testing room at Elrington Colliery near Abernethy held the equipment that kept miners alive if the gas came in. Elrington's records document recurring problems with underground fires and gas accumulations throughout its operational life, and NSW Mines Minister Ernest Baddeley visited the Hunter coalfield in September 1944 specifically to inspect conditions at the colliery. SCBA sets had to be tested and recharged on a regular cycle. The room that handled that work sat ready until coal production ceased in December 1962, when approximately 90 men left the site for the last time.
