About this print
Inside the main engine house at Elrington Colliery near Abernethy, a pile of tyres sits on the floor where winding machinery once drove coal up two concrete-lined shafts to the surface. BHP built the colliery to supply its Newcastle steelworks, targeting 3,000 tonnes of coal a day. The mine never reached that figure. Production ran from 1930 until December 1962, when BHP shut the colliery with large reserves still in the ground, citing persistent operating losses. By June 1964, an engineering works had opened in the same buildings.
