03 THE STORY

About this print

175 Motels and Apartments carries its name as a literal street-number-and-purpose sign at the front of the building, the lettering in white capitals on a backlit panel mounted above the entry. The building is multi-storey, brick, with the room doors opening onto external balcony walkways at each floor. Steel external staircases climb from the carpark at each end. The room walls are painted cream; the door trims are a darker brown. The carpark is empty at this hour. A row of small front gardens between the carpark and the building is unmaintained, with the lawn dry and the plantings overgrown.

175 Motels and Apartments was photographed at 21:25 on 3 April 2018, on the southern run of Hotel Motel 101. The project covered 101 traditional Australian motor inns across three sweeps out of Sydney in late March and early April 2018: south on the Hume Highway, north on the Pacific, west on the Great Western. Drive-thru reception, parking in front of the rooms, low rise. The motel-and-apartments hybrid form let smaller operators capture both the short-stay drive-by trade and a longer-stay residential market on a single property.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

A 5-minute walk from Westmead Station, and 2.9 km from Riverside Theatre Parramatta, this low-key hotel is 10 km from Wet'n'Wild Sydney water park, and 12 km from Sydney Olympic Park. Standard rooms have modest decor and feature TVs, and tea and coffeemaking facilities. Upgraded rooms add modern furnishings and flat-screen TVs; some have kitchenettes and sofabeds. Suites feature open-concept living room/dining areas and kitchenettes. Room service and Wi-Fi (fee) are available. Amenities include a cosy cafe and free parking. $135 - $150 per night.

Hotel Motel 101

2015–2020 · 103 photographs

Hotel Motel 101 is a series of one hundred and one motels photographed in 2018 across three runs out of Sydney. North to the Central Coast, west through the Blue Mountains to the central western tablelands, south down the NSW South Coast. The count crept up from a planned seventy toward the round number, plus one for safety.
