The 3 Sisters Motel in Katoomba, once a vibrant stop, now stands derelict. Its faded sign and decaying structure reflect years of abandonment. This former roadside accommodation slowly succumbs to time.

03 THE STORY

About this print

The 3 Sisters Motel at Katoomba carries its full property frontage in this photograph: the building, the carpark, the sign at the kerb. The motel sits behind a wide front lot on the Great Western Highway in Katoomba, the single-storey brick building running along the back of the carpark with the room doors facing forward under a continuous awning. The pole sign at the kerb carries the name in white script on a blue panel, the same neon-outlined sign that the project documents separately in another frame. The carpark is empty. A small palm in a planter at the office end carries the standard postwar tropical-aspirational landscaping. The mountain air is cool.

The 3 Sisters Motel at Katoomba was photographed at 00:48 on 4 April 2018, on the western run of Hotel Motel 101. The project covered 101 traditional Australian motor inns across three sweeps out of Sydney in late March and early April 2018: south on the Hume Highway, north on the Pacific, west on the Great Western through the Blue Mountains. Drive-thru reception, parking in front of the rooms, low rise. The Katoomba name carries the Blue Mountains' best-known landmark, the Three Sisters rock formation visible from Echo Point a short walk from the motel's front door.

04 FROM THE FIELD NOTES

At the south end of town, this modest motel with a cottage is 7 minutes' walk from the Three Sisters lookout point, 1.3 km from the Katoomba Scenic Railway and 10 km from Wentworth Falls. The low-key rooms feature free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, tea and coffeemaking facilities, and room service; some add minifridges. The 3-bedroom cottage offers a full kitchen, a dining room, a deck and a garden. Breakfast is available for a surcharge. Additional amenities include a bar and grill restaurant with a terrace, as well as BBQ facilities and picnic tables. Parking is free. $103 - $110 per night.

Hotel Motel 101

2015–2020 · 103 photographs

Hotel Motel 101 is a series of one hundred and one motels photographed in 2018 across three runs out of Sydney. North to the Central Coast, west through the Blue Mountains to the central western tablelands, south down the NSW South Coast. The count crept up from a planned seventy toward the round number, plus one for safety.
